Back in June GWAR announced they’d be going on a three month long tour “Use Your Collusion” with forty seven shows across the U.S.
Once I saw they would be at my local venue I had to photograph them. GWAR is one of those groups that has stood the test of time.
GWAR is best known for their theatrics which include elaborate costumes, stage sets, and of course wet works. With over thirty years of music and shows it’s only natural the crowds age group were going to vary.
GWAR is best known for their use of fake bodily fluids to spray the crowd, in fact people show up to their shows in white shirts for the propose of leaving soaked and stained kind of like a souvenir. One of the best things to see was how people prepared themselves for the upcoming onslaught.
I was one of two photographers brave enough to shoot GWAR in a small venue like Revolution. Security all dawned ponchos and even offer them to us photographers we kindly declined. I figured I would be save shooting off to the side, oh how wrong I was. GWAR opened up with “Fuck This Place” and quickly decapitated one of their minions, I took the first hit right across the face and camera as you can see in the photo above.
After quickly cleaning my lens the game was on, three songs goes by fast and shooting a group like GWAR there is a lot to cover.
The crowd would go insane every time GWAR spray them, it didn’t matter whether it was blood, vomit or semen, they wanted more.
It’s at this point both me and the other photographer were running and slipping trying to get our shoots before we where kicked out of the pit.
GWAR is one of those groups that is a must-see, in fact, every person that I know has seen them multiple times. They are a complete show that is perfectly geared for October.
One of the best things about going to a GWAR show is the after math. I left a little before the show ended in order to beat the crowd. Walking back to your car in downtown Ft. Lauderdale covered in blood definitely turns heads. I decided to grab some quick food before getting home when the poor girl at the window went to take my money she let out an ear-piercing shriek and dropped my soda out the window onto the floor. The girl made a young man come to the window to take my cash and give me my food. It also took me over an hour and a half to clean the blood off my camera gear and two showers for myself.
